Patterns of Organization of Peripheral Sensory Receptors

Principles of Receptor Physiology

Part of the book series: Handbook of Sensory Physiology ((SENSORY,volume 1))

Abstract

A major obstacle to successful understanding of the sequence of events involved in somatic sensibility is the accurate identification and characterization of modality-specific receptors. This problem of identification has plagued the scientific community for over 100 years (Boeke, 1932, 1940; Stöhr, 1928; Weddell et al., 1955, 1962; Winkelmann, 1960, 1967). Recent studies utilizing refined cytologic technics have not provided a solution to the general problem. In a few instances, questions raised over the past century have been answered with the use of electron microscopy; however, the ultrastructural approach has raised as many questions as it has answered.

This study was supported in part by U. S. Publik Health Service Research Grants GM-10102 and AM-11407.
