Abstract
Throughout this work (T, M n) will denote a fixed point free involution T: M n → Mn of a compact manifold M of dimension n, with or without boundary. Only in Section V.8 will we consider involutions with fixed points, and we will state carefully which involutions are fixed point free and which are not. We will always assume that M is a combinatorial (piecewise linear, p.1.) manifold and that T is piecewise linear (p.1.), or that M is a smooth (C∞) manifold and that T is smooth. Then the quotient M/T gets a well defined piecewise linear or smooth structure.
