Genetic Aspects of Early Mammalian Development

Abstract

Knowledge of the genetics of pre-implantation development in mammals and man is increasing rapidly with our improving control over these stages. It would be impossible to do full justice to the entire subject in one lecture. Fortunately, Dr. RALPH BRINSTER has covered major areas of this topic in his description of the synthesis of macromolecules during preimplantation development. I will concentrate largely, although not entirely, on our own work. Most of my remarks will also be devoted to the oocyte and the embryo, but first a few comments are called for on the genetics of spermatozoa, especially with reference to attempts at the identification of different types of spermatozoa from their haploid phenotype.
