Abstract
A systematic description of the material in this book is provided by the table of contents, the introductions to individual chapters, and the index. Here we wish to comment more informally on our general plan, to emphasize and motivate the central concepts, and to mention briefly some additional topics not discussed in the text. This introduction is not a logical prerequisite for the chapters which follow — quite the opposite — but it may give the reader some helpful first impressions of our subject.
