Abstract
Within the animal kingdom the Protozoa are considered to represent one subkingdom, while all multicellular animals (Metazoa) belong to the second subkingdom. In spite of this high taxonomic evaluation, Protozoa do not belong to those organisms which are generally known to the layman. Because of their unicellularity, they are generally very small organisms visible only with the aid of the microscope. Few Protozoa, like the extinct nummulites, ever reached a size of several centimeters.
