Abstract
The genus Amaranthus (Amaranthaceae) comprises ca. 50 species of herbaceous annual plants widely spread in all tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Most members of the genus are weeds, show rapid vegetative development, and produce large quantities of small seeds with a high content of good quality protein. Because of the extreme plasticity of Amaranthus shown in response to varying environmental conditions, taxonomical classification has been difficult (see Sauer 1950, 1967) and is still in a state of flux (Feine 1980, Huang 1980).
