Solanum phureja: Anther Culture and the Induction of Haploids in a Cultivated Diploid Potato Species

Within the diverse group of cultivated diploid (2n = 2× = 24) potatoes of the Andean region of South America, distinction among species is not always possible. Local farmers have generally applied similar selection criteria to develop “cultivars”with regionally important characters from a species mixture in which Solanum phureja Juz. and Buk. has generally been included. The distinguishing characteristic which has most often been used to separate S. phureja from other cultivated diploid tuber-bearing species is a lack of tuber dormancy, a feature which has enabled two or three crops per year in frost-free valleys at high altitude (Correll 1962). Some selected clones have become known as the Papa Amarilla in local markets of Peru and Colombia.
