Part of the book series: Biotechnology in Agriculture and Forestry ((AGRICULTURE,volume 12))

Abstract

Sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L.), as a sucrose producer, is an economically important agricultural plant particularly in temperate zones. It is a member of the family Chenopodiaceae, which has 102 genera and some 1400 species widely distributed in maritime regions, occurring particularly on salt marshes, muddy foreshores, and shingle beaches. Many of them are halophytes. The major genera are Chenopodium, Beta, Kochia, Atriplex, Suaeda, and Spiacea. Some of these species are the wild prototypes of commonly cultivated plants, (e.g., sugarbeet).
