Abstract
The Danube basin has an area of 817 000 square kilometres with eleven riparian countries. Small catchments from four additional countries are draining to the Danube basin, to. More than 40 large dams and barrages have been constructed on the main river and its tributaries utilizing the hydropower potential. While these facilities provide important opportunities for the utilization of the river’s resources, they also are illustrative examples of the difficulties of balancing these important economic activities with environmentally sound and sustainable management. These aspects are addressed in a general form by GOLDSMITH and HILDYARD (1984), PEARCE and TURNER (1990), COMMON and PERRINGS (1992), TURNER (1993), van DAMM and WESSEL (1993).
