Abstract
On its course from the Alps to the North Sea, the Rhine crosses and/or follows the borders of Switzerland, Austria, Germany, France and The Netherlands. With a length of almost 1.300 km, the river has a total catchment area of approx. 185,000 km2, which can be divided into six parts:
-
Alpine Rhine — from the main headwaters to Lake Constance,
-
High Rhine — from Lake Constance to Basle,
-
Upper Rhine — from Basle to Bingen,
-
Middle Rhine — from Bingen to Cologne (Köln),
-
Lower Rhine — from Cologne to Lobith/The Netherlands, and
-
Delta of the Rhine — from Lobith to the estuary.
