Zusammenfassung

Hohe Anforderungen an die Reinigungsleistung von Abwasserreinigungsanlagen führten in den letzten Jahrzehnten dazu, daß neben der Elimination von Kohlenstoffverbindungen zunehmend auch die Entfernung der Nährstoffe Stickstoff und Phosphor erforderlich wurde. Da zur Stickstoffelimination meist der Weg über die Nitrifikation und Denitrifikation beschritten wird, werden Belebungsanlagen heute einerseits in einem bis zu zwei Zehnerpotenzen niedrigeren Schlammbelastungsbereich gefahren als zu Beginn der Abwasserreinigung, andererseits werden anoxische, d.h. sauerstofffreie, nitrathaltige Zonen in das Fließschema eingeführt. Zur biologischen Entfernung von Phosphor, der bisher allerdings noch meist über chemische Fällung eliminiert wird, werden anaerobe Zonen zwischengeschaltet.
