Zusammenfassung
In der biologischen Abwasserreinigung machen wir uns die Prozesse zunutze, über die in natürlichen aquatischen Systemen durch mikrobielle Lebensgemeinschaften (Biozönosen) organische und anorganische Abwasserinhaltsstoffe in Biomasse bzw. gelöste und gasförmige Abbauprodukte überführt werden (Selbstreinigung). An diesen Reinigungsprozessen sind vor allem Bakterien beteiligt, das sind einfach organisierte Organismen (Prokaryonten), die sich unter optimalen Bedingungen durch Zweiteilung sehr schnell vermehren können (logarithmisches Wachstum). Außerdem kommen auch höher organisierte Organismen (Eukaryonten) wie einzellige Protozoen wie Wimpertierchen oder auch vielzellige Metazoen wie Würmer vor, die nicht gelöste Substanzen aufnehmen, sondern sich von partikulärem Substrat wie Detritus oder anderen Organismen wie Bakterien ernähren. Daneben liegen auch Viren vor, nicht- organismische Partikel, die zwar genetisches Material enthalten, jedoch nur innerhalb der Zellen anderer Organismen vermehrungsfähig sind.
