Boundary Element Analysis of MHD Equilibria of Toroidal Plasmas with Free Boundaries

In the analysis of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibria of toroidal plasmas, we have to use numerical methods because of the non-linear governing equation. For an analysis of a field reversed configuration (FRC) device, the problem is reduced to solve the Grad-Shafranov equation with free boundaries, which has been studied by many authors [1,2]. So far we have been studying MHD equilibria fixed boundary problems by using boundary element method (BEM) [3,4]. In this paper, we solve a free boundary problem for a model of a FRC device, and obtain converged solutions with an iteration method.
