Rehabilitation Measures at the Rum Jungle Mine Site

  • Chapter
Environmental Management of Solid Waste

Abstract

The Rum Jungle mine site is about 80 km south of Darwin in the tropical Northern Territory of Australia (see Fig. 1) where there is a well-defined wet season when much of the rain falls as localised thunderstorms. The average rainfall in the area is 1.5 m, most of which is confined to the period October to March. The mean temperature in the region is about 28° C with the mean monthly temperature varying between 29.6° and 25.1° C. The East Branch of the Finniss River which passes through the mine site usually begins to flow about December and stops flowing by about the end of June.
