Abstract
The Regional Copper-Nickel (Cu-Ni) Study which is described in this chapter is the result of a unique effort by a state government in the United States (US) to guide the development of major mineral resources of Cu, Ni, and Co in an orderly, comprehensive, and environmentally sound manner. In the early 1970s, the state recognized that exploration of the resource, which is located in northeastern Minnesota within the Superior National Forest (SNF) and adjacent to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA), could bring both large economic benefits and widespread damage to an environmentally sensitive region of the country.
