Zusammenfassung
Die Energiegewinnung durch Dissimilation energiereicher organischer Moleküle spielt sich in der höheren Pflanze ganz ähnlich wie bei den nichtautotrophen Organismen ab. In Anwesenheit von O2 findet im allgemeinen eine vollständige oxidative Dissimilation zu CO2 und H2O statt, wobei ein großer Teil der hierbei stufenweise freigesetzten Energie über die Vermittlung des respiratorischen Elektronentransports in den Mitochondrien unter O2-Verbrauch in Form von ATP aufgefangen werden kann (Atmungskettenphosphorylierung). In Abwesenheit von O2 ist dieser Abschnitt der Dissimilation blockiert. Es kommt unter diesen Bedingungen zur Fermentation (Gärung), d.h. zu einem unvollständigen Abbau organischer Moleküle zu den Gärungsprodukten Ethanol und Milchsäure (Lactat), wobei nur relativ kleine Mengen an ATP gebildet werden können (Substratkettenphosphorylierung). Bei der Umstellung von aerober zu anaerober ATP-Bildung kommen komplizierte metabolische Regelprozesse ins Spiel, welche eine optimale Anpassung an die Verfügbarkeit von O2 gewährleisten. Als Substrate der Dissimilation dienen in erster Linie Kohlenhydrate, die über die Glycolyse abgebaut werden können. In speziellen Fällen werden auch Fett (Triacylglycerol) oder andere organische Moleküle dissimiliert.
