Abstract
The meteorological conditions of the atmosphere and its earth surface boundary determine the transport of natural and anthropogenic trace gases and particulate matter, as well as these trace substances’ residence in, and their removal from, the atmosphere. The long-range transport of particles and their local deposition and distribution on the surface of branches, leaves and needles depend on macro- and micrometeorological conditions in relation to the structure, or “roughness”, of the particular local surface. Such mesoscale atmospheric phenomena caused by orographic structures as mountain and valley wind systems, temperature inversions, radiation fog, and cold-air lakes also have to be considered. The modeling of the atmospheric transfer processes are described in Chapter 1-A.
