Forest Decline and Air Pollution

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 77))

Abstract

Current studies on the causes of forest decline are focused mainly on the role of inorganic gases and the resulting acidification of the plant environment which may lead to direct or indirect injury. In the last few years, however, several studies have identified other environmental stress factors acting on plants, such as bleaching by the photochemical activation of volatile halogenated hydrocarbons (Frank and Frank 1985), and the influence of monoterpenes on the photosynthetic apparatus (Wagner et al. 1987).
