The Scattering Matrix and the Scattering Cross-Section
In this chapter we will get to know the formalism that is used to describe reactions in high energy physics. These reactions might involve scattering processes or decay and production of particles. The central role here is played by the scattering matrix S, which was introduced by Wheeler and Heisenberg (Wheeler 1937; Heisenberg 1943, 1944). Before presenting a general formulation we will look at a simple example.
