Abstract
In Chap. 4, we discuss the basic many-body theory of the semiconductor gain medium and derive the semiconductor Bloch equations, which contain the many-body modifications due to the Coulomb interaction between the carriers. The many-body effects manifest themselves as plasma screening, bandgap renormalization, interband Coulomb attraction, and carrier-carrier scattering.
