Abstract
The failure modes discussed above reveal that even structures as perfectly optimized as wood exhibit vulnerable spots when their optimum state is changed or disturbed. Chapter 3 showed that the external shape and the inner architecture of trees are optimized through the combined action of several self-optimization measures. The failure of one or more of these measures due to external disturbances or decay may inflict the tree with a localized or thorough disaster. The mechanical reserves that the tree can mobilize to avoid such catastrophes are defined and specified by the safety factor.
