Innervation in the JGA

The Renin-Angiotensin System

Part of the book series: Zoophysiology ((ZOOPHYSIOLOGY,volume 35))

Abstract

Oberting (1944), using a silver impregnation method, observed a rich nervous plexus along the afferent arteriole of the glomerulus and nerve endings in contact with cells of the arterial wall of the human kidney. deCastro and dela Peña (1952; cited in Barajas 1964) reported the presence of a rich sympathetic innervation in both afferent and efferent arterioles in flle human kidney. De Muylder (1952) described in his monograph that nerves are associated with the renal arterioles in the region of the JG cells and MD in the mouse. Since then, extensive investigations have confirmed a nonmyelinated nerve supply to the JGA (see Davis and Freeman 1976; Barajas and Müller 1980; Taugner and Hackenthal 1989 for reviews; Figs. 2.1, 2.4, 3.1).
