Abstract

Most mitochondrial proteins are synthesized in the cytosol and must then be transported across the organelle membranes to reach their functional destination. Mitochondria contain two translocation systems, one in the outer membrane and one in the inner membrane (Glick et al., 1991; Pfanner et al., 1992). The system in the mitochondrial outer membrane (MOM complex) consists of at least six protein components most of which have been isolated, cloned and sequenced (for review see Kiebler et al., 1993).
