Abstract

Protracted thrombocytopenia and bleeding is a serious complication in bone marrow transplantation (BMT). While engraftment of the erythroid and myeloid progenitors occurs promptly (within two to three weeks), there is often an unexplained period of profound thrombocytopenia. In contrast to the myeloid and erythroid lineages, lineage specific megakaryocytic-colony stimulating factors are not yet available for clinical use. The production of platelets is thought to be regulated by lineage specific growth factors which stimulate megakaryocyte (MK) proliferation and induce MK maturation (Hoffman 1989)
