Summary

The prognosis of the disease was studied in 31 patients with Ph-positive chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in relation to the expression of the MDR-1 gene of peripheral blood cells. 24 patients were in chronic phase (CP) and 7 patients were in accelerated phase (AP). In situ hybridization was used as a method of detecting MDR-1 gene expression. It appeared that much more patients in AP than in CP expressed MDR-1/mRNA in their peripheral blood cells. In CP MDR-1 gene expression appeared to be of prognostic significance in relation to further progression of the disease. Prognostic significance depended on the period of the onset further progression of the disease. Prognostic significancedepended on the period of the onset of the disease to the date of testing.
