Abstract
This paper is addressed to the broad question: can the global agricultural system satisfy rising demand for food and fibre to the year 2030 at ‘acceptable’ economic and environmental costs? Costs are understood to include those borne by people living between now and 2030, as well as those imposed on subsequent generations by management of the system between the 1990s and 2030. The paper is thus about the sustainability of the global agricultural system in the sense that one’s judgement of whether the system is sustainable would likely depend on whether the answer to the question about ‘acceptable’ costs is yes or no.
