Part of the book series: Biotechnology in Agriculture and Forestry ((AGRICULTURE,volume 36))

Abstract

Banana and plantain (Musa sp.) are an important food crop, especially in the tropics. The world produces more than 70 million tons of banana, plantain, and cooking bananas, but most of these are used for domestic consumption. Bananas are produced in the tropical and subtropical regions and the supply is available to the consumer throughout the year. About 80% of the world’s export bananas comes from the Americas (Central, South, and the Caribbeans). About 10 million tons of bananas enter the world market and serve as an important factor in the economics of many developing countries.
