Zusammenfassung

Das öffentliche Interesse an neuen Therapieansätzen und Fortschritten bei der Behandlung akuter Schmerzen ist gewachsen. Aufgrund neue- ster Entwicklungen in der medizinischen Forschung und Praxis, insbe- sondere im Bereich der Neurobiologie, können Schmerzen heute gezielt bekämpft werden; in manchen Fällen kann bereits der Entstehung von Schmerzen erfolgreich vorgebeugt werden [31]. Ermöglicht wird dies durch technische Neuerungen, neue Medikamente und Therapiean- sätze, so z. B. durch nichtinvasive, endoskopische und chirurgische Maßnahmen, die das Gewebe nur minimal verletzen. Gesetzgeber, Berufsverbände, wissenschaftliche Fachgesellschaften und Patienten beschäftigen sich mit verschiedenen Themen, die in Zusammenhang mit der Schmerztherapie stehen, z. B. der Frage nach der Kostenüber- nahme durch Krankenversicherungen. Zu den Organisationen, die sich mit dieser Thematik befassen, zählen die Weltgesundheitsorganisation, das britische Royal College of Surgeons [25] und in Amerika die American Pain Society (APS) [16,17], die Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Organizations und die Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) [4]. Der Patient ist heute über die Fortschritte im medizinischen Bereich im Bilde und erwartet dementsprechend eine hervorragende ärztliche Versorgung einschließlich einer wirksamen Schmerzlinderung.
