Abstract
Bone scans have a limited role in the diagnosis of acute septic arthritis. The reasons for this include the relative ease with which the clinician can make the diagnosis in superficial joints, e.g. the hand or ankle, and the well-recognized possibility of a normal three-phase bone scan in acute septic arthritis of the hip. The task of bone scans is to assess the presence or absence of osteomyelitis in the adjacent bone.
