Abstract

Most hepatocellular carcinomas (HCs) (65%–85%, the epidemiology varying in different parts of the world) develop in cirrhotic livers, the cirrhosis arising from alcoholic intoxication or viral hepatitis, with varying proportions from one region to another. Hormones, and in particular oral contracepation, are a risk factor regarding adenomas, and, to a lesser degree, fibrolamellar carcinomas. Anatoxin plays a role in the pathogenesis of HC in Africa and Asia. Hemochromatosis and primary biliary cirrhosis are also predisposing conditions.
