Pancreatic Tumors and Overview of Pancreatic Disease

  • Chapter

Abstract

If had followed the opinion of many members of the imaging community, I would have suppressed this section: for them, the diagnosis of pancreatic tumors (PTs) begins with spiral computed tomography (CT) and ends with magnetic resonance (MR) sequences — probably because they ignore sonology and feel ill at ease with a transducer, if they ever held one. Since I always advocated the reliability of ultrasonography, particularly in the field of small PTs, I felt like an outcast. However, I have been joined in my low caste by others (Brambs 1993; Omson and Charboneau 1987; Palazzo 1989; von Pichler 1989): there is no doubt, ultrasonography is a fantastic tool for disclosing PTs; often the simultaneous ultrasound discovery of a PT and of liver metastases enables one to close the imaging file without the need for any other procedure. And the era of perendoscopic ultrasonography (PERUS) (or transcaval ultrasonography see Chaps. 18, 27) is only just beginning.
