Abstract
The pathological features of nasal neoplasia in rats, mice, and hamsters has been extensively reviewed (Brown et al. 1991; Feron and Bosland 1989; Feron et al. 1990; Reznik and Stinson 1983). Tumors have been recorded for each of the major nasal epithelial types and a number of accessory structures, and some of these neoplasms are the subject of recent research on mechanisms of carcinogenesis. Toxicological pathology may contribute in a major way to this research through (a) determination of the site of origin of nasal tumors, (b) identification of the tissue or cell type from which they were derived, and (c) characterization of tumor progression from the earliest stages of the process. This paper outlines diagnostic issues of importance for nasal tumors, using selected examples. More detailed information is available in the literature cited. Throughout this text the anatomical identifiers are derived from classic anatomical texts (Hebel and Stromberg 1976; Negus 1958; Reznik 1983; Sorokin 1983), while the classification of the nasal meatuses and ethmoid turbinates are those proposed by Morgan et al. (1991) and Mery et al. (1994), respectively
