Abstract
To some individuals, it may appear inappropriate to treat drug addiction with “other drugs.” This assumption views drug dependence as somehow different from other diseases, e.g., diabetes or hypertension, which have been shown to respond effectively to prescribed medication. Drug dependence can be a chronic, relapsing illness that requires different treatment interventions at different periods in the patient’s course of illness. Sometimes, a pharmacologic intervention may be required; at other times, medication may not be useful.
