Abstract

Considerable heterogeneity is present in drug abuse. People differ in tendency to use drugs, age of onset and duration of use, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic response to drugs, liability to and expression of dependence, and consequences of use. In the general population, drug use falls on a continuum ranging from abstinence to chronic daily use. While most people never take illicit drugs nor engage in nonmedical use of psychotherapeutics, an estimated 37% of the population reports having done so at least once in their lifetime (SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES ADMINISTRATION 1993). Population prevalence of illicit drug use varies with drug availability as well as a number of demographic variables (e.g., sex, occupation, education, marital status, employment, age, race, and geographical region) (FLEWELLING et al. 1992)
