Abstract

Colorectal cancer is the second most common malignancy in the United States following lung cancer, and it was responsible for 61000 deaths in 1990 (American Cancer Society 1990). Males and females are equally affected, and the mean age of incidence is 62 years. At present, 38% of cases occur proximally and 62% distally; compared with the incidence several years ago this represents a tendency toward an increasing incidence of colon cancer as compared with rectal cancer (Beart et al. 1983). Surgery remains the treatment of choice with either curative or palliative intent. About 15% of the patients are inoperable at presentation for medical reasons or have tumors that are technically unresectable during laparotomy or are only resectable for palliation (Cameron et al. 1979; Sugarbaker 1986).
