Abstract
Esophageal carcinoma is known usually to have a poor prognosis even when the lesion is removed by surgery. Many clinical trials on adjuvant therapy have been attempted, and such therapy has been reported to improve the prognosis (Kelsen et al. 1983; Sughmachi et al. 1986). In general, there have been four alternative treatment modalities for esophageal cancer: radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hyperthermia, and immunotherapy. Nowadays, immunotherapy is little used, whereas the other three modalities remain popular. In particular, hyperthermia has recently become well established and is widely used in combination with chemotherapy and/or irradiation (Li and Hou 1987; Sugimachi et al. 1988).
