Abstract
The emergence of publicly funded breast cancer screening programs in many countries around the world reflects a scientific basis showing that sufficiently early detection and proper treatment of breast malignancies can favorably impact case fatality rates as well as political, social, and economic forces prioritizing this effort among competing national agendas. Clinical trials from Europe and North America have helped define both the potentials and the limitations of screening programs, as indicated elsewhere in this text. With information available in both scientific and lay publications, women’s awareness of the possibility of early detection of breast cancer is perhaps greater than with respect to any other disease.
