Echomammography: Technique and Results

Radiological Diagnosis of Breast Diseases

Part of the book series: Medical Radiology ((Med Radiol Diagn Imaging))

Abstract

The first studies on ultrasound examination of the breast were performed in the early 1950s (Howry et al. 1954; Wild and Reid 1952, 1954), but it was 20 years later, after the introduction of gray-scale imaging, that diagnostic sonographic visualization of complex breast structures became possible (Jellins et al. 1971; Kossoff 1972). At that time, however, the resolution necessary for early breast cancer detection could not be achieved.
