Abstract
Holography allows to extend particle image velocimetry (PIV) to deep flow volumes. Interrogation of the reconstructed image volume by focusing on a specific depth layer, however, is limited severely by noise from out-of-focus regions. The problem is overcome by light-in-flight holography (LIF), utilizing the limited coherence of the light source. The scheme allows to reconstruct thin layers in depth without disturbance by the rest of the field. Their location is selected by the position of the reconstructing aperture on the hologram.
