Environmental Education in Protected Areas as a Contribution to Heritage Conservation, Tourism and Sustainable Development

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIG,volume 40))

Abstract

The paper presents a new role for national park centred environmental education in relation to protected areas. The role involves both fostering an environmental consciousness among visitors and local people and using environmental education as a tool of protected area management. Research needs are discussed in the context of two karst landscapes in Poland and the U.K. Both are experiencing intense development stresses on account of their proximity to large urban centres and the large number of visitors.
