Abstract

A representative marine area along the fjorded coast of Northeast Newfoundland is being considered for designation as a National Marine Conservation Area. Early investigations have highlighted the lack of available information on spawning areas and fishing activities. To complement scientific studies, Parks Canada is working with area fishers to document local knowledge. Regional dependence on the traditional fishery dictates a planning approach that builds on community management practices. Research is described that will help to further the establishment process.
