Abstract

Cell growth, normal development, and diseases depend on interactions among groups of small molecules and macromolecules of structural and functional proteins and nucleic acids. Bucket brigades of several essential groups of signaling proteins carry messages from outside the cell membrane to the nucleus in order to make new mRNAs and proteins, new DNA, or new cells, to repair DNA, or to die by falling apart (apoptosis). This controlled process of cell growth and development is circumvented by several gene mutations in cancer cells. Mutated genes generate critical signaling proteins and make cancer cells independent of other cells and other normal proteins for rapid growth in benign or malignant tumors.
