Zusammenfassung
Die Entdeckung der vasokonstriktorischen Funktion des Sympathicus wird allgemein Claude Bernard zugeschrieben. Bernard beschrieb 1852, daß nach Durchtrennung des Halssympathicus eine Erwärmung und stärkere Durchblutung des Kopfes auftrat. Diese vasokonstriktorische Funktion des Sympathicus wurde in der Folgezeit auch für andere Körperregionen aufgezeigt. Der Nachweis der Gefäßdilatation nach Durchtrennung sympathischer Nerven war zugleich ein Beleg dafür, daß die Nerven dauerhaft tonisch aktiv sein müssen. Dadurch ergab sich konsequenterweise die Frage nach dem Ursprung dieser tonischen Grundaktivität sowohl in bezug auf die Lokalisation ihrer Entstehung im Zentralnervensystem als auch auf deren Mechanismus. Beide Probleme konnten bis heute nur teilweise gelöst werden.
