Abstract
Within the last 3 years, DNA vaccines have entered the scene as a radically new approach to prophylaxis of infectious disease. Surprisingly, if injected intramuscularly, the DNA is expressed in vivo much more efficiently than would have been predicted from tissue culture DNA transfections. Antibody responses and major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I-restricted cytotoxic T cell responses (CTL) have been observed.
