Abstract
The incidence of ARDS remains unclear, but most studies suggest that it is an order of magnitude less than the initial estimates made by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the USA [1]. In 1972 NIH estimated that there were 150 000 new cases per year in the USA, roughly an incidence of 60 per 100 000 population per year [2]. It is difficult to study the incidence of ARDS due to changing definitions and unclear accuracy of diagnosis in large population areas, failure to capture complete data and a poor ability to know the true population base or denominator (some patients managed with ARDS within the population area may come from outside; others from the population base may develop the syndrome while outside the geographic area and would fail to be identified).
