Abstract
Heimut Zwölfer’s global perspective of nature has always been enriching. His broad geographical approach to the ecology and evolution of phytophagous insects on thistles, coupled with detailed knowledge on individual interactions between plant and herbivpre, provide a comprehensive view seldom achieved in the literature (e.g. Zwölfer 1986, 1987, 1988; Zwölfer and Romstöck-Völkl 1991; Zwölfer and Arnold-Rinehart 1993). Recognizing the larger picture by understanding the details of interactions is a long-standing feature of his contributions in evolutionary biology (e.g. Zwölfer 1978, 1982; Zwölfer and Bush 1984; Zwölfer and Romstöck-Völkl 1991). We all have much to learn from his example and much to appreciate in his extensive publications.
