Abstract

The fundamental source of benefits accruing to households and firms in a city are the economies of agglomeration. It seems quite obvious to think that the spatial effects of innovation may be partially understood by considering how innovation can impact on agglomeration economies. This is the precisely the approach followed in this chapter. To pursue our task we need a model in which production takes place under agglomeration economies. The model will be provided in Section 9.3. In the same section we will then present some preliminary thoughts about the impact of innovation on agglomeration economies and the competitive position of cities.
