Zusammenfassung
Zunehmende Industrialisierung führt zusammen mit dem raschen Bevölkerungswachstum zur Übernutzung der Trinkwasserreserven. Dieses Problem wird häufig durch zusätzliche Schadstoffeinträge in das Wasser verschärft. Sorgfältiges Management der Wasserressourcen wird immer dringender. Besonders in dichtbevölkerten oder hochindustrialisierten Gebieten ist die Versorgung mit sauberem Trinkwasser problematisch. Lokale Verunreinigungen können durch Unfälle oder geringe, aber lang andauernde Schadstoffeinträge (z.B. durch Sickerwässer von Deponien oder industriellen Altlasten) verursacht werden. Als Folge muß das von benachbarten Brunnen geförderte Wasser vor der Verteilung häufig intensiver vorbehandelt werden. Selbst in ländlichen Gegenden kann das Grundwasser durch Landwirtschaft oder unsachgemäße Müllablagerungen belastet sein.
