Abstract
The optimization of fertilizer N application to maize crops is fundamental to avoid pollution of ground water by nitrate. In maize, the great variability of N soil mineralization in summer, the importance of animal manure inputs in many situations, and the uncertainty of the potential production as a consequence of variation in the intensity of summer drought, make prediction of the optimum N application rate very difficult.
