Concluding Remarks: N Hazards to Crops and Environment

  • Chapter
Diagnosis of the Nitrogen Status in Crops

Abstract

The arguments given in this book have indicated that the concept of critical nitrogen concentration in plants has a strong theoretical and experimental basis. The critical N% curve versus cumulative dry matter appears to be largely independent of environmental cropping conditions and plant genotypes. It is even rather independent of the crop species, at least if we consider separately plants with a C3 or C4 metabolism although some small variations within each of these two groups cannot be excluded. It is a unifying concept which can be applied to all arable crops, grasslands, and possibly to forest trees.
